In Honor of Dr. Seuss and Read Across America...We Celebrate the Love of Reading

In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday and Read Across America Day on March 2, the students, teachers, and staff of Patrick Henry Elementary School, Alexandria City Schools, dedicated February 27-March 3, 2017 as Dr. Seuss Week.  As the Area Co-Chair of Alexandria City Schools, for Reading Is Fundamental of Northern Virginia, I spent time at Patrick Henry during their celebration for the one and only Dr. Seuss!

During their week of celebrating literacy and the love of reading, the students, teachers, and staff members shared their favorite Dr. Seuss books, wore crazy red and white hats to honor one of Dr. Seuss' classics, "The Cat in the Hat," and the students adorned themselves with mismatched socks for the beloved tale, "Fox in Socks."  The culminating activity for this week-long celebration was "Pajama Day!"  As the students of Patrick Henry paraded through their school in their favorite PJ's, we were reminded of one of our favorites, "Dr. Seuss' Sleep Book."

The enthusiasm for their week long celebration to honor the beloved Dr. Seuss and Read Across America Day was ever present in the Media Center at Patrick Henry.  On Friday, March 3, Kelsey Frey, Media Specialist at Patrick Henry orchestrated and delivered a wonderful Reading Is Fundamental Book Distribution.  Kelsey Frey and her Media Assistant, Dana Sterling welcomed students into the library all throughout the day.  Students chose a favorite book and spent time at a variety of designated learning centers in the Patrick Henry Media Center that all payed tribute to some of the classic Dr. Seuss favorites.  The students were laughing, singing, and learning all in sync as they celebrated the love of reading!

YEAH!!!!
